A Chilling Night at the Theatre: The Woman in Black Comes to the Regency Stage

If you love suspense, psychological thrills, and live theatre, then mark your calendar. The Freeport Players’ Guild is bringing the stage classic The Woman in Black to the Regency Theatre from Friday, March 13 through Sunday, March 15, 2026.

Known around the world as one of the most haunting plays ever staged, The Woman in Black is a masterclass in storytelling, atmosphere, and imagination.

The Story: A Ghost That Refuses to Stay Buried

The play follows Arthur Kipps, an older solicitor who has carried a terrifying secret for decades. Desperate to finally share the ghost story that has haunted him since his youth, Kipps seeks the help of a young actor to bring his memories to life.

In an attempt to tell the story to his loved ones, Kipps must essentially become an actor in the play of his own life, reliving the chilling events he experienced long ago in a small, cursed town.

But as the actor helps recreate the past on stage, something unsettling begins to happen. The deeper they delve into the story, the more real and more terrifying the haunting becomes.

What begins as a rehearsal soon spirals into something far darker… leaving audiences questioning whether the past can truly stay buried.

Meet the Cast

This intense two-person production relies heavily on the talent and chemistry of its performers.

Remardo Russell takes on the role of “The Actor.” His character is tasked with helping Kipps transform his frightening memories into a theatrical performance. As the rehearsal unfolds, he becomes increasingly immersed in the story, until the line between storytelling and reality begins to blur.

Opposite him is Jeffery Swain, portraying Arthur Kipps. As the troubled solicitor recounting his past, Kipps must relive the terrifying events that have followed him for years. Through this role, audiences will experience the emotional weight of a man confronting a trauma he has kept hidden for decades.

With only two actors on stage, the production relies on powerful performances, vivid imagination, and the suspenseful storytelling that has made The Woman in Black a global theatre phenomenon.

A Director’s Long-Awaited Vision

Melanie Jessel

Directing this chilling production is Melanie Jessel, who has been involved in theatre since the 8th grade. While this marks her first time directing a full-length production, the opportunity has been a long time coming.

In fact, The Woman in Black has been sitting in the back of her horror-loving brain for more than a decade, and she is both thrilled and relieved to finally bring it to the stage.

Since joining the Freeport Players’ Guild in 2022, Jessel has appeared in productions such as Trapped in Marriage and the Guild’s first murder mystery production, Murder at Theatre Royale.

She extends heartfelt thanks to her spouse Jess, her mother Cindy, and the dedicated cast, crew, and supporters who helped bring this production to life.
